Our History
What began as a small home Bible study in the late 1970s grew into a thriving church community. Through faith, perseverance, and the dedication of its members, Fairfield Mountains Chapel overcame challenges and expanded into the welcoming place of worship it is today. Discover the journey from a simple gathering to the Chapel we know and love.
From A Home Gathering To A Thriving Chapel: Our Story
The history of Fairfield Mountains Chapel begins with a vision—a vision sparked by Gary and Jennie Bruinsma, a Dutch couple who moved to Lake Lure in the late 1970’s. They began hosting Wednesday morning Bible studies in their home. As more people joined, the gatherings moved from house to house, creating a strong and dedicated core group. Before long, they took the next step—holding Sunday morning worship services at Rumbling Bald. Dr. Preston, pastor of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church preached and led the service.

The First Chapel and a Leap of Faith
Fairfield Mountains Chapel was incorporated in 1982 - and soon thereafter the growing congregation felt it was time to establish a permanent place of worship. In June of ‘83, Rev. Everette Chapman was called to serve as the chapel’s first full-time pastor. Less than a year later, on June 3, 1984, the new chapel building was dedicated. The congregation flourished.
Growth, Tragedy, and Resilience
By 1998, the Chapel had outgrown its space, requiring two worship services each Sunday. While this accommodated the growing congregation, it also disrupted the close-knit, family-like atmosphere the chapel cherished. To address this, the elders proposed an expansion, and by early 1999, the congregation approved a plan to build a larger facility. Construction was well underway when, on July 28, 1999, disaster struck—a lightning bolt hit the building, and fire reduced it to ashes. Undeterred, the congregation pressed on. For over a year, they held worship services on the covered terrace at Rumbling Bald, moving indoors during the coldest months. Meanwhile, the new building took shape under the leadership of Bittle Construction Company.

A Church That Endures
Over the years, the Chapel has continued to grow in membership, attendance, and financial strength. In October 2020, after decades of faithful leadership, Rev. Chapman retired and was honored as Pastor Emeritus. That November, the church welcomed its new pastor, Kevin Anderson, who now leads the congregation into its next chapter. Fairfield Mountains Chapel’s story is one of faith, perseverance, and an unshakable commitment to its community. From small gatherings in a living room to a thriving chapel family that has overcome challenges and trials, it stands as a testament to the power of faith and the strength of a determined congregation.
